Default Perdido Key

Spent a few hours off the beach on Perdido Key today to test out my new fishfinder/GPS. I bought the Garmin Striker 4. Works really great. Was nervous about whether or not I had installed the inhull transducer properly.

I took some rods out with me, and some fresh peeled shrimp hoping to maybe find a pompano or two. I started off in the trough between shore and the first sandbar. 3 lines out with peeled shrimp and I was jigging a 4th. 45 minutes of no bites I moved to on top the sand bar and spread out my lines again. Again no bites. There was some bait activity and bird activity about 100 yards past the sand bar. I paddled out and dropped anchor. Within 10 minutes I was catching whiting and silver trout non stop. It was in 25 feet of water about 250 yards or so offshore.

The wind which had been from the north when I left had shifted to a south wind and was starting to chop things up a bit. So I called it a day and headed back with just enough fish for dinner. No reds, no black drum, and no pompano. There was a ton of glass minnows out there which the fish were feeding on. The trout were holding 5-15 ft off the bottom and you couldnt even get a shrimp to the bottom before they nailed it. Small in size but still made for fun on light tackle.

I did have some really BIG hits on the fish finder. I am talking while anchored about a 3-4 ft thick solid red just stretching across the bottom finder about 10 feet below me when I was in 16ft of water. Lots of other big hits but I have no idea what could have been below me on the biggest hit.

Bull red, big black drum, I don't want to say the 'c' word and get everyone's hopes up, but there are some pics up in the pier section. Never know.

whoops. sorry for the confusion everyone. The photo I posted was not of the really big mark I had. That was just the photo of my new ff. The big mark I was talking about was completely solid from one side of the screen to the other (I was anchored) and pretty thick. Then there was spacing underneath of empty water, then the bottom.

It prob was a thick school of bait, or maybe a stingray slowly going by. I suppose it could have been a shark, but it really is just speculation.

Again, sorry for the confusion!!
