Default Out of Area, but good fishing and pics

Hey yall

Im back in Augusta, GA but had a crazy day yesterday where every fish was a river monster so I figured I would share.

Went to the Savannah river and tied up at the bottom of the Clarks Hill dam, one side of the dam opens for about 4hrs every day and during that period the fishing is wild, but tough. We anchored up in the still water about 30 yards from the current at the base of the dam (any closer we'd be dealing with constant waves and rips of current) and would pitch some live herring as close to the current as we could and then freeline them. We'd use 1/0 kahle chrome hooks on 14lb fluoro.

Granted, I dont freshwater fish too much, but I caught my biggest striper, hybrid, largemouth, gar and my buddy got the largest blue cat ive ever seen in real life. The fishing was tough due to the fullmoon and currents, but we still had a hell of a day.

Four personal best fish in one trip? Did I read that right? That's awesome!

What was the water temp?

Yah you read that correctly! Normally down the savannah river the fishing isnt that great so ive never been able to snag the big fish. This was the first time I fished the dam and realized thats where the monsters are. When the dam opens it spills out the deep cold and clean water from the lake so the temperature plunges down into the mid to low 60's when it is open and the river rises about 3-4 feet. It was probably close to 95deg outside yesterday.

When the dam opens all the fish around dart towards the dam and it turns into a fishing frenzy at the right spots.

They are some nice fish. The spotted bass is real nice & the striper. We got the state record gar here at the dam in Albany.

Having cold water in the summer such as you describe allows stripers to reach trophy size, like the one you caught.

They close the striper fishing on the Flint in the summer. They all stay congregated in the cold water springs. If you know where the springs are its like fishing in a barrel.
