Default Opening Snapper Day Fail

Not the opening day i was hoping for. Got out late to avoid the storms. Plan was to shoot to a close spot, get 2 and head right back in before the next storm rolled through. Got off the beach and realized I left my bait in the truckbed. Go back in get my bait and then head back out. The spot is blowing up, but i can't get my bait past the trigger. They even chewed my poor swimin mullet in half. I start heading to another spot further out and look to the west and Portofino is gone under a massive storm. Turn around and headed right in. Barely got loaded up before the storm hit. I heard on the radio a boat was struck by lightning.

Live to fish another day!

So Ginz (or anyone), I'm new to yak fishing in the gulf. Where do you go for snapper fishing and what kind of setup/rig do you use....if it's not too SuperSecret?

Snapper can be found on structure, man made or natural. Iíve caught them as close as half a mile from the beach. They also can be found around structure in the bays. You can find public coordinates for structure http://www.fishingdestinguide.com/GPSMAIN.htm. Finding private numbers takes time and luck with a sonar/gps.

Rigs vary greatly. The only must have is braided line over 30lbs with a Carolina or knocker rig using a 5/0, 6/0 circle hooks. Donít use a rod longer than 7ft. Spinning or conventional is personal preference.
