Default Minor report, a few spanish

I paddled out yesterday from Grayton Beach. I found huge schools of bait by the fads and bouys but they wouldn't touch my sabiki, so I pulled a frozen cigar with a pink duster, and also trolled a red and white Ratl Trap knockoff. I chased schools of bonita boiling at the surface but could not get them to hit a shiny MR 17. I wonder if they are just targeting some really small bait. I trolled around, drifted, zig zagged between 40 ft and 60 ft. Caught two smallish spanish (one on the cigar, the other on the Ratl Trap trolling really close behind my boat). Something larger hit a cigar but just sliced it in half without finding a hook. I saw the rod bounce twice really fast, but it never let out any drag. I was on the water from 8-11.

I have faced the same issue with bonita schools during my past two trips. Have rolled up on huge schools of them blowing up all over the place & have yet to get one to hit anything. I think they are just keyed in on super small bait, as you said. Either way, glad you put a couple fish in the yak!

Your retrieve has to be fast from the get go but save one more gear once they turn and lock into the lure. White jigs and diamond jigs work well. Another tip is to focus on throwing into the lastest boil. Eyes from other fish will on every boil for wounded.
