Default Looking For Striper, Found Reds 12/26/15

A friend and I have seen all the striper mania on the forum recently and decided to try out Blackwater for the first time. We launched near the I-10 bridge with not much of an idea what to do and paddled/peddled to fish some deeper water hard for striper.

I was spoiled for Christmas with a new Sabalos 3500 and Yeti 35 and I was itching to break them in.

At around 4:30 with not so much as a nibble, we decided to hit some docks to change up our luck. I quickly hit my limit and then some with a 24", 23" and 18" red. I was pretty content with my limit but we stuck around a while longer and my buddy finally caught an 18" red. We came in 1 short of a 2 man limit since I threw back my 18" red but had a good post Christmas outing.

The Elusives live up to their name...

If there is a WILL there is a way... keep at it, fish hard, and dont stop... its only a matter of time.

True that, I just have to get it dialed in like any new species. This was my first time specifically targeting them and my first time at all on Blackwater. I think I may have ventured a little far south and that I need to focus north of the I-10 bridge, for stripers, but I'll always take some reds.

There are plenty of Stripers south of I-10. Just keep looking! You will find them. I haven't found any good size ones but all of my buddies have put 12 pounders in the kayaks.

I will get lucky eventually.

Nice Reds.

I gotta look twice all the time when I see your posts!!! My name from HS up was always Jai, then turned into JaiBo!!! Jason is just easier!!! hahaha

Nice catch/report iJabo! I was rigged up to make the 1 hour drive from Niceville to blackwater . . . but the reports of murky water discouraged the heck out of me! I was going to launch from Mae Lane and fish Petersen Pt up to the I-10 to focus on stripers--had my flyrod and a spinning rod all rigged up! Now I see I should have at least given it a try!

Jabo has been my nickname since I can remember. Don't know why or how it came about, but just about as many people call me that as my real name, so I can see where the confusion can come from!

I thought we were going to get skunked when I saw how terrible the water was. The reds didn't seem to care though. The wind on the open bay was not all that fun however.

With me fishing there for the first time I didn't want to tempt ole Murphy any more than usual! I stayed in and cleaned the garage . . . which will lead to more fishing passes from CINCHOUSE, not total loss at all!
