Default Late kayak snapper report Thur 6-14-2012

Started out with only 4 hrs of sleep and a hangover due to staying out too late on Oyster night.
Got to the beach about 6:30 with a slight N wind perfect for going a little further out in search of bigger fish.
I was able to get a few hardtails, cigs and sardines on the way out for the livewell.

4.7 miles later get to the spot and all the smaller baits produced small fish. The last cig I drop down gets hit and I reel up thinking no bait but instead I notice a large chunk missing. I knew it was a good sized trigger that did that so I drop the chicken rig and as soon as it hits bottom before I could reel up fish on! After a good fight on my 4000 shimano I have a 20" trigger in the kayak

Started dropping hardtails down and it seemed all the snapper did was kill them and not eat them.So I butterflied a hardtail and they were all over it! After a good fight got a 30" snapper in the kayak. So after a few more drops I get another fish in the 30" range. So I get ready to head in and go to ice the fish down good for the ride in and the last fish I caught flips out of the front hatch!! You know if snapper season would have been closed that fish would have floated but no he swims off green as could be! So it takes me another hour to get a descent fish then its time to head in.

It was a great day to be on the water and the only shark I saw was on the beach.
Looks like it might be a while before the weather is gonna let me back out the.
Oh yeah I did see some flying fish but didn't hook anything on the troll out and in.
I got the two snakes on cut bait on the bottom! (they are legal)
Gps odometer said just over 12 mile round trip!

Says they are legal in state waters.

Recent Management Updates

Triggerfish:
The recreational harvest of gray triggerfish in Gulf of Mexico federal waters will close June 11. This date was set by NOAA Fisheries Service, who determined the the 2012 recreational quota for triggerfish would be caught by then. The federal season will reopen Jan. 1, 2013. The recreational harvest of gray triggerfish in state waters remains open. Vessels that have a valid federal for-hire license for Gulf of Mexico reef fish must adhere to this federal closure even when fishing in state waters.
