Default Im done with 27lb seven strand and sailfish sighting

I took my cousin visiting down from Alabama out in the Gulf today looking for his first saltwater fish. Got a late start around ten o clock. There was a decent two foot swell but they were wide, slow far apart and smooth so not bad at all.

Slow at first, then around noon the fan kicked on as the swells laid down giving us a good wind chop and that is when the fish turned on. My first run a decent schoolie king but he ate through the leader yak side. We both caught a couple spanish and my cousin had his leader ate through as well. Then he caught a barely legal king. I only brought four leaders, three home made and one bigger store bought. I had another king eat through my leader yak side so Im done for the day.

We see a weed line and head for it. Flying fish every where including some really really tiny ones which was cool to see. Im talking like three inchers.

About that time a sport fisher is running the line and I see every one scrambling. They are only about fifty yards away so I cast my ling jig towards where they were casting just in case. About that time I look down and solid six ft sailfish is no more then three feet from my yak all lit up. Because I didnt have any more leaders I didnt have a bait on and I had ballyhoo too so I could only throw my jig at him . I lost sight of the fish but took a few casts and burned it across the water with no luck.

We decide to call it and start heading in when my cousin hooks up with about an eight pound schoolie. Fish is landed and we head to the beach. My cousin caught a limit of kings his first time salt water fishing and first time fishing from a yak. I was happy to put him on some fish.

I will be out there again in the morning and hopefully Monday morning, this time better equipped.

Dont go out of pickens, head east. It seems the better reports are from the beaches farthest from either pass. That should let you know where I was.

Great report. Sounds like your cousin had a great time.

I haven't used sevenstrand in yrs because of that exact problem. Single strand only for me.

27 # sevenstrand is the only reccomended leader for Kings. All else fails. lets all dissagree on this one. Why did you think it broke again? Anything larger will be cut by a nice king. Ask why? The gap betwen their teeth. Its been proven by us.

I have grown to prefer single strand leaders even for shark. They just seem to get more bites, though you do have to change them out more often.

Main line was seventeen suffix. Ive used 27lb sevenstrand off the pier and boats with success but for what ever reason yesterday was a difference story.
