Default GS 5/28/12--- 34.5in Red Snap, kings, etc

My friend Jack came down from N Al for a couple days and we decided with the calm weather that we should make a rig trip. Headed out at 6:45 and stopped along the way for some kings, spanish and bobos. We could've caught a million spanish and bobos along the way. Its been a while since I have seen that much life. Almost non-stop schools the 5 miles out to the rig. Got there after 2 hours of paddle, fish, paddle, fish and immediately enjoyed the hottest king bite imaginable. I don't know how many we caught, but after a while we found it harder not to catch one, then to catch one. I lost a 40+lb mack 5ft from the yak, very aggravating after a long fight on 12lb. Hook just decided to come out. Switched gears to bottomfishing and found the bluefish and small jack crevalle to be a major problem. After a lot of wasted bait, I put on my "secret" lure and made a cast between a rig leg and a cooling pipe. Bounced it 3 times and got hammered. After a ridiculous fight including getting wrapped twice around the pipe, I finally boated my new PB on Red Snapper from the yak; 34.5 inches and around 22-23lbs. Hooked a couple more snaps but nothing like that.

About 1:00 we headed in and stopped for a few more spanish. After about a mile and a half, I spotted something about 400yds east of us on the surface. It turned out to be some weather gathering thing-a-ma-jig, but I had a good feeling that there would be at least one tripletail and I was right. He was sitting right on top under a clump of sargassum. I threw a fly at him, but he was very skittish and the remoras were ridiculous so I modified. I tied a hook straight to the leader on my fly rod and dropped a live shrimp right in his face. He ate as soon as it hit the water and was jumping all around and then tangled me in the "thing". Almost had him out and he threw the hook. Dammit.

Very fun trip, very taxing in the ridiculous heat we had yesterday. Here's a couple pics and one of Alan's Mahi from last week to make him happy.

Now thats the kind of report I like to see! 3 weeks and counting and I will be on the sand. Kudos on one serious snapper!
