Default Grudge Match!

It’s a little bit long, it’s a story not a report.

I’ve been chasing bass for the past month. Not just any bass, a few in particular that have beaten me. They came off, buried up in weeds or threw the lure on a jump. They’re not big, not a trophy by any means, the largest may be 6# on a good day....but that’s not the point now is it?

So, Thursday evening just before dark I slipped into the kayak with my eye on a few selected areas.

1st on my list was that fat lil black football I have missed 4 times. But tonight was different.

I fan casted the area, not knowing exactly where he was hiding, might be by the fallen log, might be in that lil cut in the bank w/ the overhang. 2, 3, 4 casts, my hopes were fading.

My next cast was to the log. My baby bass colored fluke on a 1/0 light wire EWG landed w/ the perfect amount of splash about 4 ft. from the log, I let it sink for only a second, then twitch….twitch, then I see it, almost in slow motion the water to the right of the lure moved, he came up under the fluke, inhaled it and thought he had an easy meal.

I was ready and when I felt a lil weight I reared back, driving the hook thru his jaw. He dove to the bottom, I pulled him to the surface and got his head turned and he came my way. A few more zigs n zags and he was done, quick photo and released for another day.

My next target was a bass that I have also hooked and lost 2 times. He has swiped at my lure and missed many times over the past month. My well placed cast resulted in the predictable swirl…wait…wait, BAM!....he didn’t have the hook in his mouth and my fluke came sailing back at me…Missed AGAIN, he won that round and to add insult to injury, tore up my last bass colored fluke.

So I moved on to spot #3. This one was a small patch of open water about washtub size tucked into the bank under some overhang. I didn’t have any other flukes on me the ONLY thing I had was a Gold Bream Slayer bait FSU Alex gave me over a month ago. So I rigged the slayer up on the 1/0 hook, eased into position.

It took me three casts to place the slayer in the hole, it was getting dark and all I saw was a swirl or water, I slowly tighten the slack, felt a lil resistance and my ugly stick went to work. I lost this fish last time when I allowed a fraction of a second to the fish and he buried me on the weed line. Not this time, he made the mistake of coming to the top…when he broke water, I pulled his head my way, reeling like a mad man, I skimmed him over the grass into open water where the fight ended in just a couple seconds. Photo op., back in the water.

Too dark to cast accurately, I headed in. Happy with my success but looking forward to my next mission…I still have a couple of grudge matches to settle.

Nice story, and great bass. I felt like I was on a boat watching you do this with how detailed the report was.

awesome job! There's nothing like going after specific fish that you've seen/missed before. Redemption is sweet!

Thanks you guys!
It really is a blast to be able to target specific fish during the spawn.

I'm ready for round #2.
