Default Fish slicks - BW-10-4-17

I sat on shore this morning before daylight drinking hot coffee, watching the bay in front of me. I can see my targeted area easily from the bed of my truck, very close to my launch point.

The light from the fading full moon illuminated the water perfectly, what I was looking for were fish movement and fish slicks.

Finally, as morning crept in, I started seeing what I was looking for, fish slicks!

If you do not know what a fish slick is, like the name implies it’s an oily slick or sheen that floats to the surface of water when fish are tightly packed and rubbing together releasing some of the slime from each other. Both baitfish n predator fish will do this.

As I watched, there was a definite pattern to the movement of the fish. The area I launched at contains a gut, channel, ledge or drop-off (whatever you prefer) that runs into a bowl shaped depression about 50 yds. off the bank. Fish were moving back-n-forth along this depth change and the wind had them nervous and tightly packed, hence the slicks.

I staked out w/ my back to the shore, wind pushed me facing west, perfect for tossing lures into and alongside of the bowl and the gut.

Tried several lures & soft plastics, they liked the green backed MR17 deeper in the water column and barely moving (wounded).

Managed 1 red about 22”, 2 trout at 18” but only managed 1 photo, the rest didn’t come out well enough to post. Not a banner morning, but what a great way to start the day. Back at launch at 7:30 for work.
