Talking First Slot Red at Mid-Bay Bridge

Went out from White Pt yesterday around 2:00pm. Peddled out toward the main channel. Had live shrimp and fiddler crabs. Tried the pilings for sheep with crabs, but only caught a few undersize ones. Started drifting shrimp on a Carolina rig and adjusted the weight till I got a good natural drift with the current. BANG!! Hooked something that fought like crazy. It headed straight for the pilings and I couldn't slow it down. Got wrapped around some rip rap and broke off. Immediately re-tied and offered a shrimp in the same area. First cast, a red walloped it. Peddled away from the pilings and battled this fish out in the open. WHAT A BATTLE!! HOLY COW these fish can fight. It stayed down for a few minutes and tugged and stripped like crazy. Half the time when it was stripping line, my rod was 3/4 in the water with a big 'C'. Got him in the yak and measured him - 27" on the nose. Two casts later another fish smacked my rig!! Landed it - 26". Lost a couple of other heavy hits. WHAT A BLAST!! Man, these big reds can FIGHT!!

Nice! Don't suppose you tried the flats at all?

I'm looking forward to the water warming up and not having to paddle out to the channel every time for a reliable bite.

Those slots are a great fight on light tackle.

No I didn't try the flats and yes its quite a hump peddling out to bridge. Do the flats at White Pt start to heat up typically in March/April??
I tried another spot on Monday that looked good but I didn't have any hook-ups. I launched from a small park near Toms Bayou and peddled out to Postil Pt and worked the water along the way. I did pick up a couple sheep under the bridge at Toms Bayou on the way back.

I did take pictures and texted them to my brothers-in law back in Michigan. They wish they were here. I'll have to figure out how to post pics on this site.
