Default Choctawhatchee Bay, 13 Dec

Went out last weekend on Saturday (12/6) and got totally skunked all over the bay, mid-bay bridge, flats around white point, one of the lakes connected to the bay, and I went all the way out to the channel markers under the mid-bay bridge and got nothing. Last weekend was a busy weekend at mid-bay between the boats blasting ducks, a group of spear fishermen, half dozen other kayakers and the many boats fishing. Also tried hitting a couple of the bayous around Niceville and Valparaiso from shore after work on Tues. No specks, but found an angry little jack.

Decided to make a return trip today (12/13) and focus more on the structure with sheepshead in mind. Conditions at sunrise were chilly, but zero wind, the water was glass and tide seemed alright. Flipper was visible in every direction, but a long ways out. After seeing someone had dumped almost two dozen filleted sheepshead onshore near White Point last weekend I had some high hopes for today. But the convicts lived up to their reputation and earned their stripes: they stole all my live shrimp without a single hook set. I did manage an unexpected 24" red on my last shrimp. Switched to jigging a gold spoon as I drifted and landed two more reds over the next couple hours, a 26" & a 30" that fought like like he was ten inches bigger than that. All fish caught in deep water, and the schools I saw on the fish finder were large but moved fast, with no birds diving to show they were coming through. I did not see any bait on the surface today.

Went a little experimental with them on the grill. Grilled 'em low and slow on the half shell, with some Tony's and a dash of chipotle pepper powder for some extra kick. Once they were done on the grill the filets fell right off the skin and served it on top of some thai curried rice. Pretty complementary flavors and something different.

Been leaving my kayak on my truck just waiting for these storms to pass the last couple days! I'll shoot you a pm a day or two before if work, weather and wife line up so that I can head out.
