Took the kayak out in the east end of Choctawhatchee bay this morning. It was very calm and uneventful until I saw some birds working the water about 1/4 mile away. I quickly pedaled over there and found that a large school of ladyfish was ripping up some bait. I decided to try to see what might be under the commotion and started throwing a Rapala X-Rap at them and occasionally a Mirrolure She Pup. I ended up catching a nice 23 inch slot red of the she pup and 3 large hardheads on the Rapala.
The action subsided, the birds left, and I decided to make one last cast with the Rapala.
Wham! My kayak went for about a 10 minute ride as I brought in a nice bull red. My tape measure was rusted and broke, but I laid him out in the kayak and measured later. He was 38 inches, give or take and inch. While I was fighting the red, I caught a ladyfish on my other lure just dangling in the water. The red doesn't look huge in the pic, but compared to the 23 inch one, he was. He did not fit in my landing net....
I decided to quit while I was ahead. Not bad for two hours of fishing!
