Default Blackwater Bay 23 December

So today was the first chance that I could take the new Hobie PA out fishing. Oscar (oxbeast1210) and I met at the launch at about 0545 and got the yaks out and loaded up. We got on the water just as the sun was rising and it wasn't too bad of a morning weather wise. Oscar started trolling around looking for something to put up a fight while I got used to driving the aircraft carrier around and finally got everything situated so I could concentrate on fishing and not worrying about where my gear was or it getting in the way. Well we tried a few docks at first and they weren't producing anything so we made the decision to head over to one of the rivers "near" where we launch. I didn't expect anything big in this area so I had my two smallest rods set out with a crank bait and a gulp shrimp. Not more than a couple minutes later one of my rods doubles over but it seems as if it is snagged since the supposed fish isn't fighting at all. That is until I turned the yak around to go and try and find my snag. We come to find out it is not a snag but a bull red. It probably took me around 25 minutes to pull this one in.

The biggest ruler I had was the Florida Law Stick and it was only 36" and this one was a little bit bigger than the stick.
So that was a pretty great way to get the PA slimed up and we continued on to our spot. Well only another couple minutes goes by and the other pole I had out gets hit. This time it took me 35 minutes to get it in while it towed me around and having to avoid various crab traps like they were land mines. It measured in at a little over 32".

Well at this point I can't complain since I have boated two very nice fish but at this point I would like to put something in the cooler to take home to the chef. Once we get to the river it seems as if the trout didn't get the message that we were here to catch them. We are getting a little discouraged and not sure where to look but then Oscar starts catching trout left and right while I catch catch anything anymore. Just when it looked like I wouldn't have any luck as I have been up and down our usual section of the river with no luck my rod doubles over and I reel in this nice slot red.

This red measured in at just under 21" so now I have something in the cooler but at this point all I can catch are reds and all Oscar can catch are trout even though we are covering the same area with the same gulps. Oh well. I did manage to catch one trout though that was barely legal since my wife wanted to try them and missed out on them the last time I brought them home. After that we headed back towards the launch and didn't get another bite. Towards the beginning of the day we had some stalker pelicans following us around. They would fly straight at us and then veer off right when they got close and land about 20 feet away and just watch us. Kind of creepy.

Well I can see why people love their PAs now. Don't get me wrong the Outback was nice to try but there is SOOO much room in the PA. Actually almost too much room since it makes you want to bring more stuff with you.

Great report. Not too bad when you have to throw your fish back because they're too big!

I have to decide between there and little lagoon on Monday
