Default 4/9 Nearshore

Headed out a little later today, probably around 11. Pushed off the beach to a flat gulf, but quickly the winds started picking up. I trolled a yozuri crystal (on a penn battle 4000 with 25lb dark green braid and a 50lb clear leader) right beyond the 1st sandbar. It got crushed in about 7ft, I almost got spooled but had to add some thumb drag to prevent it. I had no idea what was on the line, but i quickly got in my other line and went on to battle. This fish was dragging me all over the beach and going on huge runs.

By this point the wind had picked up and it kept blowing me straight to shore, the mystery fish was dragging me due west. I had to keep paddling out every few minutes to stay within a safe distance of the breakers.

Anyways, I was doing all the fighting on a light-medium weight rod after about 20 minutes I was first able to see a brown outline through the water and was able to rule out a sting ray or a shark. But this only left me with a cobia and a bull red. Unfortunately I knew I was too shallow for the cobia. I kept fighting and kept dialing up the drag to finally get some line back. Around the 30 minute mark I was finally able to see the outline of a big bull red who happened to be foul hooked through the dorsal fin (which was the reason I struggled so hard to get him off the bottom and gain any ground). I got him though and he turned out to be a 35" red!! great catch and it was hard to let him go after that tough fight.

I deemed it a little too rough to head out deep afterwards and called it a day

I applaud you for going out and making it back in these winds.

Nice fish. Let me know if you ever want some company. I'm always up for hitting the water when I have the day off. Glad to see a fellow Carolina fan around.

Thanks for the report.. I bet it was a blast to be out there.. Sucks the wind had to rear it's head and throw a wrench in the plan..

Those 4000 size reels really do the trick on the bulls (and the kings, and mahi, and blackfin). Great report!!

Thanks everyone for the nice comments

@gulfbreezetom: Yah the Battle 4000 is great. Its not the biggest reel I use, but it is incredibly dependable and I feel like it can handle anything I could ever catch (i use it for bass, cats, trout, reds and kings). I also keep about 150-200 yards of braid on it so it is hard to get spooled.
