Default 1st serious kayak fishing trip

This is the culmination of Sat. & Sun. as I tried out a kayak loaned to me by another PFF member who made the offer to let me try his spare yak before I bought one. I promised him Iíd post my trips. Iím not a stranger to kayaking, just never fished from one, so here goes.

Sat. I wanted to see if I was comfortable casting, moving round, etc. in the yak. I took 2 rods, launched in the lake I live on and paddled around, not so much fishing but getting acquainted. Satisfied I wasnít going to dump myself every time I made a cast, decided to take it out in the river on Sun.

I launched this morning around 6:30. Plan was to troll/drift fish a few areas within reasonable paddling distance. Trolled and drift casted for about a 1-1/2; not a hit or nothing. I decided to troll 1 last route as I headed towards the ramp.

I was trolling a black-silver jerk bait. Even though I had no depth finder, being familiar with the area I trolled along the edge of depth change; 4-5 ft. to 8-9 feet. As soon as I popped up to the approx. 4-5 ft. area, game on!

I managed several ď1st from a kayakĒ this morning, my 1st disappointing loss of a mid-slot red who nailed it as I crested the edge of this flat and managed to take advantage of my rookie status and shake the lure off at boat-side; my 1st needle fish as I fan casted the area after losing the red & my 1st rat red boated after resuming my trolling.

Sorry I donít have any pics., I havenít mastered the art of removing my phone from a waterproof case, while holding a fish and so on.

All in all not a bad 1st trip; have to work on the photo thing.

Yeah...pics and yaks are not easy. I have a gopro that I usually stick on mine but you could buy a cheap water proof camera too..... Glad you are getting a hang of it, and it'll make ya wanna get a yak fer sure!!!

Im sure you will figure out a few things very quickly, a net really helps land fish on a kayak. Nets prevent high sticking and allow you still keep steady pressure on the fish, just like you would when swinging fish into a boat.

Let me know if you would like to peddle sometime.

The big question is did you enjoy it? Wait, maybe you should wait till after the transition to answer that.
