Default Saturday's range day

Well Saturday I finally got to go to the range and shoot my 300 ultra. My loads I worked up to sight in were 92.5 grains of reloader 25 with a 200gr ELDx bullet coated in HBN. Which from my chrono the 200gr ELDx were being pushed at (lowest 3179 fps and highest 3229 fps with no signs of pressure) and they were averaging about 1.5” at 100 yards. Of course nothing I like at the moment and I have some work to do now. I did do a ladder test of 87, 87.5, 88.5, 90, 90.5, 91, 91.5, 92, and 92.5 grains of powder. The range was so busy that day and also the ultra’s muzzle blast blew off the sun shade on my chrono that I just ended up shooting my ladder test and not being able to record anything. I think I might start with 90, 90.5, 91, 91.5, 92 grains of Reloader 25 and shoot three shot groups to find my “accuracy node” then play with seating depth. Any reloader’s I’m open to insight?

Btw if you have not used a straight trigger on your bolt rifle…. I’m sold. I bought a Timney straight trigger and have it set at 2lbs… I love it.

I was thinking the same thing. Also the recoil wasn't to bad, the Pachmayr recoil pad sure helps out. First time ever using one of those recoil pads.

200gr at well over 3000fps is skint the hell back. Lot more powder burning than my 150 .308 I push at 3000! Playing with other powders?

Lmao This rifle is going to be a long range hunting rig. I still need to get a bipod and a few other things for it. My goal is the eventually use it to take some western game out past 800 yards. Hopefully I can get a load worked up to shoot 1/2" at 100 yards then fine tune it at 200 yards. And hopefully Memorial weekend I will be making a trip to Itah to shoot with some guys I know. They are taking their rifles out to 2.5 miles just for kicks and giggles. I know one of the guys has taken their 7mm SAUM just shy of 2,000 yards. Hopefully they can school this guy on some long range shooting.

I haven't tried playing with other powders, if I do I might try Retumbo. I have heard really great things about this powder in the Ultra mags.

I can say this I would rather shoot my 300 ultra than my fathers 270 Model 70 with a plastic butt plate. Both are probably 9lb rifles.

What gun/scope are you shooting?

I just bought a .300 RUM. I'm not as sophisticated as you (chrono, reloading, etc.) but would like to compare notes. I probably won't be ready to shoot for another month. I'm waiting on my Timney trigger and scope mounts to come in.
