Common sense should dictate when to throw it. If you running 30+ mph, it's not going to do any good to toss it, better to turn and head full throttle back till you're close enough to toss it to them. Then, carefully throttle over to retrieve them, motors off once you're close enough to toss a rope...

its the only question I missed on the whole test. I answered do the MOB maneuver. answer was throw a life jacket first.
Throwable or PFD really doesn't matter if you're a couple hundred feet or more from your mob. Been a long time but if I remember, several of the CG's answers didn't work that well in the real world.

We have a throwable cushion out where we can get to it quickly, and a LifeSling in the cabin. The plan (that I hope we never use) is to throw the cushion immediately then tie the LifeSling off to the boat, chunk it, and approach the MOB as if we were trying to take a ski rope back to a fallen skier. But "everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth" right?
