Default Facebook style chat / instant message

I know others have suggested this feature, and I know that the old forum had a live chat. It would be nice to have a chat or instant message feature on this forum. The facebook type feature would be very useful. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

In all honesty, it probably would'nt work to well with 5K members or more signed on at once and everyone trying to talk... My only suggestion would be to get on AOL and get a chatroom started there up to 25/30 ppl in a room..

I dont believe there is ever 5000 people on this forum.

Maybe 5000 people have the home page set to the front page of the forum, but I would bet you never have more than a few hundred actively participating.

No, I didnt miss that...

--When you leave your computer on the front page and it AUTOMATICALLY refreshes every 3 minutes, that is not actively participating.

That's not five thousand people actively reading the forum. Plenty of people set pff for the home page and have it on but aren't around.

--I've also noticed that sometimes this software says that every single user registered on the forum is online. That's not possible.

--And if you know anything about server session variables, many of those computers may not even be on, but the server still reports them being online, because the time since last activity hasn't yet exceeded the amount of time set in the asp.net session settings.

Chris had it on here for a couple days last year or the year before and it was a mess, a bunch of user having 10 different conversations on the same page. The Instant Chat where you can talk to one person would work and would be pretty cool.

Sure it is. Not likely but very possible.

No, it is not possible for all 10,000+ users to be on at the exact same moment on this server that Chris is running. Period. The server would not handle the load. It routinely craps out under a much smaller load than that, and that's just with some people posting and the other's just doing the automatic 180 second refresh.

With the current server, it is not possible. In fact I don't know many server's that can handle 10,000 simultaneous users, that usually requires a load balancer and multiple webservers and/or multiple database servers.
