Default Biggest threat to recreational angling

There is a direct attack against the recreational angler . NOAA has made no secret about using the guise of conservation to control and profit off of the natural resources of the American fisheries. We are losing the battle. Limits are smaller , seasons get shorter and pressure is unlawfully applied to our state sovereignty to bully any one who opposes . Their short term goal. Purchase tags in addition to licensing for every fish. Long term goal. All recreational angling be catch and release. This is no secret and the first steps are catch shares. Catch share is put in place as a pilot program to make recreational angling permission a comidity in wich the fed can capitalize on . No one can explain to me how shortening our snapper season based on total catch is justified while permitting over a million pounds of snapper to a select few out of the recreational share is good for increasing stocks. It's because it's not. Many of our small bait and tackle shops have tried to rally support at the meetings and come up short in attendance. Strategic scheduling and poor organization has been the culprit. There is a feeling of intimidation that is exploited by pro catch share advocates that " big money " is behind it and there's nothing the recreational angler can do. I would tell you that you are wrong and suggest we start here at this fourm with a petition against the catch share threat. If you think we are the little guy in this fight let me share with you the numbers from the FWC sight to enlighten you on the " sleeping giant " that we are.

There are 2500 commercial licenses in Florida who catch 51% of all snapper.
There are 8million recreational Anglers who are left with the remaining 49%
Share catch is taken from the rec angler portion to the tune of over one million pounds.

Recreational Angling provides 65 thousand jobs in Florida all in jeopardy
Recreational angling generates 4.5 BILLION in revenue in Florida also in jeopardy from catch share ( total catch is measured in pounds , catch is measured in whole fish to convolute the actual size of the harvest )

This does not include impact industries such as recreational Anglers who buy water front real estate based on fishing or boat houses and docks and sea walls ect .
We are 8 million strong in Florida . The other title that we should be identified with is every one of us is a registered voter. Keep in mind , this is just the numbers from Florida. The catch share pilot program is the whole Gulf of Mexico . States do not have to comply with federal rules in state waters and this is note a demographic that will be ignored by those who are hired in the the voting booth. They are also numbers that will not be ignored by states who may loose revenue because of the destruction of the recreational fishing industry.
Recreational Angling . It has been suggested that companies like Walmart and other big names are lobbying for catch share to capitalize on selling fish tags. They need to know the size of the market share they will loose if the public is informed and they continue to do so. The point is a petition is a powerful tool that enables our advocates to represent us when we cannot attend these meetings . Recreational anglers are wanting managed stocks in a just and efficient way. We do not see genuine efforts to protect our interest or to replenish stocks such as hatcheries in all areas where specific species are under pressure for one example . All we experience is smaller harvest, shorter seasons, more regulation and higher fees . It's like clearing the corn field and wondering why you don't have a crop in the fall when you didn't sow seed. Please make this a thread and begin a list of supporters so we can be heard.

Just one more way to control everything you do.
One step closer to being the U . S . S . A

Bunch of damn crap officials that we know as our government. Making our life a little more difficult.
If we did not work and collected government checks each month for our reward for being lazy, then we would not be able to afford the finer things in life that the democrats think we do not deserve.
Quit your job, so you can't afford to fish so they will stop ruining everything else and making all these rediculous rules.

Welcome to America, home of the MOST regulated nation in the world. Home of the used to be free. Not so much any more.

So you have to ask, what does it take to rally a bunch of hard core fishermen to do something? You go mess with someone's boat at a marina and they are ready to shoot you- but threaten to take away the right to freely catch and consume seafood on your own vessel???
Let's take some thought-out and appropriate action, or all they're going to let us catch and eat are lionfish!

Right now the opposition needs to know we are aware and mobilizing. At this point we have forums as a very good infrastructure to virtually meet. If we start with a sponsored petition , those who attend these meetings can truthfully say. I represent a number of anglers that are willing to fight this with their votes and wallets. If I walked into the next meeting , or sent a letter to the govenor voicing our opinion and opposition with a list of names 200 , 000 strong things would start changing. I put this post here to request the administrator of this fourm to consider action. Lack of fishing means lack of fishing stories. Lack of fishing stories means less internet traffic. It is simple math. A pop up asking member to sign a petition here on the web site would gather numbers quick. A anti catch share thread - like the BP one would organize us significantly.

Default Last night Gulf of Mexico fishery management council meeting.

I drove over an hour to a meeting that was supposed to last until 9 pm and was over at 7. Luckily I got there in time to ask some questions.

This meeting was not about catch shares or IFQ . Although there was a lot of talk about that. I will touch on that in a min.
The red snapper allocation for the gulf states is looking like it is going to sway more in favor of the recreational angler . It is not clear yet how much some where between 0 and 10% . Rufflly 500,000 lbs or a thousand more 5 lb fish. No one would touch the pilot program questions I had as this group really is not directly involved. How ever they did talk significantly about IFQ even though it is NOT part of amendment 28 . IFQ ( individual fish quota) is the Fishery management's answer to faulty data. There was a sportsman's lobbyist there who was right on top of the " faulty data " pointing out that they are basing everything on estimates and trends, not facts. GCFM agrees snapper are over abundant and that something is not right. They put the question back and asked " how do we accurately count snapper harvest from recreational anglers? Enter the IFQ or snapper stamp. The data that GCFM also has with a short season is " binge fishing" people putting a ton of pressure on the species in a short time. With IFQ you could keep snapper all year, no more season. Therefore no binge season and more species available to an angler on year round fishing trips. Also accurate fish harvest and because GCFM is divided into Regions different areas could have different reports for different tag limits per person ect.
All sounds good
My objection to this is
One , if we need to have tags they must be free or a dollar for admin cost ONLY
TWO there MUST be some kind of restriction to inhibit carpetbaggers from acquiring large blocks of tags and then scalping them for profit .
THIS is a big concern because right on the the conservation councils web page ( advocates for share catch ) they list as an economic benefit of catch shares profit for those who sell tags.
We must apply pressure to this end . I am going to do more research on this, the lobbyist who claim to be fighting for us and post results. The recreational fishing quotas for all species are going to follow the model put in place for snapper. So even if you don't like snapper it would behoove you get involved.
