What type of fishing do you want to do? What kind of kayak do you have?

Every kayak is rigged differently depending on what your needs are.

I have a trident 13 and I used this to get some ideas for mine.

Get a good PFD, get a good seat, and get a good paddle. In that order! And WEAR YOUR PFD!

As for fishing techniques from a kayak. A good starting point is to use the same techniques you'd use while wading or fishing from shore but now you can add in being able to reach spots or features you haven't been able to get to by foot.

Don't go crazy your first time out, kayaking takes a lot more effort than just fishing because you're paddling around in wind and currents as well as casting. Also, if you find yourself fighting the wind/current a lot and getting frustrated, stop and think "how can I make this wind and current work FOR me instead of against?"

Good luck!
Alex

On your first couple trips go upwind/current and let the wind/current help you get back, especially if you get a paddle kayak. It's very easy to go a bit too far when inexperienced (personal experience).
