Flora-Bama Revives “Smallwood Redfish Classic” Tournament, November 11-14

November 3, 2010 By admin
In conjunction with the 26th Annual Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival November 11-21, the Flora-Bama will also be hosting its inaugural “Flora-Bama Redfish Classic” that starts Thursday at midnight.
This catch and release tournament emphasizes conservation, sportsmanship and companionship that founder Chew Henderson epitomized when it first began in 1984. However, after his untimely death (from cancer) in 2000 and the advent of Hurricane Ivan, it was discontinued. Now, thanks to an infusion of interest of the folks at the Flora-Bama, it is being brought to the fall calendar at the same time they’ll be featuring some of the best honky tonk players around during the Songwriters’’ Festival.
With over $500 in cash and prizes, catch entries will be made by turning in a photo of the fish on a special measuring board issued at the captain’s meeting at 7 pm, Thursday, November 11 at the Flora-Bama. Lines in the water at midnight with final entries no later than 3 pm Sunday. Sean McClellan, the inaugural event director, used to fish the tournament with his dad (Flora-Bama co-owner) and remembers it “as always being a lot of fun”, especially for the kids.
Entry fees are $20 for adults and $10 for children and payable at the captains’ meeting. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top male, female and junior anglers. Merchandise prizes will be awarded for second and third place finishers at the awards party at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 under the Flora-Bama Big Top Tent. “We wanted to keep it pretty simple for the first one,’’ Sean McClellan said. “But next year we may add divisions for kayakers and land fishing.’’
For more info about the tourney, call the Flora-Bama Liquor Store at 850-492-3407 850-492-3407 or 251-980-2227 251-980-2227 email [email protected] or attend the captains’ meeting.

With more than $500 in cash and prizes, catch entries will be made by turning in a photo of the fish on a special measuring board that will be issued at the captain's meeting tonight at 7 at the Flora-Bama.
