Default Fishfinder and Kayak Flipping

What happens if you flip your kayak in surf? Is the Fishfinder toast? Do you take it off and put in dry box if surf choppy?

Ive had my FF get wet twice. The first time it was literally maybe three seconds and it was fine. The second time it was for several minutes rolling around in some nasty surf and it was toast.

Now that Ive upgraded to a much more expensive finder I will have a dry bag and put it in there if the surf is up.

Im not sure if there is such a think as a 100% water proof fish finder.

Get a decent fishfinder, not a cheapo hummingbird freshwater model. My first was an Eagle Cuda 300 and now I have a Lowrance Elite X4 color FF/GPS combo. Both get completely soaked during launches in decent surf and I flipped several times back when I had the Eagle Cuda and never had a problem with it.

Good luck!

I always put mine in a dry box w/ my cell phone and other items I don't want to get wet. I bought one of the large plano watertight 3700 deep sized boxes for around $15 at west marine to keep it all in. I have an Elite 4 that uses a ram mount and only takes 45 sec or so to put back on so I never take a chance launching with it on when its so easy to put on once I'm in calmer water.
