Default Destin next week

Headed down Saturday 5/12 for a week with the kayak. Anybody going out? Looks like fishing is slow in the gulf but gonna try it. May try the bay some to.

I expect the gulf should stop being slow any day now. I'm hearing reports of cobia showing up a bit late, and the pelagic numbers should increase with each passing day

if you can swing the cost, a guide could really get you up the learning curve for the bay. Otherwise your best bet is live bait under a popping cork. Fan cast and search target areas. Your target areas are: Anywhere water is moving, like through a cut or against a point. Also fish points (sometimes the underwater feature is a bit far from the land portion of a point), dropoffs/edges. Its warm enough now that fish are on the flats too. Typically trout are on the flats very early and by 830 or 9 they have moved a little deeper. Its common to use topwaters on the flats very early, then switch to soft plastics. I think gulp work well b/c they are scented, but they aren't cheap. Always watch for birds and bait and target those areas.
I also am not above putting a map on a tackle shop counter and ask them to point to put ins and spots to try. In Destin your local shop is Half Hitch Tackle. There is also a Bass Pro.

Thanks again for the info. I carried my boat one time to panama city and have tried the kayak inshore just never have caught hardly anything. I will probly try the bay some being by myself and will try it out.
