Default Bloody Waters in the Gulf: 10-18-2010

On Sunday I had finally sold enough of my random rods/reels I never use anymore to pick up a new combo at HotSpots. The Avet SX reel on a Shimano Trevalla jigging rod 30-80lbs line rating. Of course I had to go break it in so come Monday AM I'm off to the Gulf for some bottom fishing.

Sabikied up a couple dozen cigs, hardtails, etc and headed for the first spot. Spotted the resident 4.5ft cuda but he knows better than to eat anything but a hooked fish on the way up. Nothing else happened withing 30min so off to the next spot. Lost a hardtail to a small shark that missed the hook while I was trolling.

Got on the next spot and dropped a live cig on a bottom rig. Halfway down it stops so I'm thinking "Uh oh!". Engaged the reel and cranked down and had the rod about slammed to the gunnel and start getting towed at 3knots. Backed up the drag and let it make a few runs, turned out to be a small king hooked just outside the mouth out of range of the chompers. Boga'ed him, took a pic, then torpedoed back in the water for a release.

Ended up with a Lane Snapper (kept for dinner) and a few Red Snaps (released) at the same spot. Used pretty much all my baits on that spot so I started making my way to another hoping to way-lay a bobo down the line. Sure enough, a school buzzes the yak, toss in a small bucktail, rip-rip-rip ZZZZZing!!!

Got to the new spot and immediately get a keeper size snapper, of course back in the water he has to go. Proceeded to catch a total of 9 red snaps including a 24inch, 7.5lbs snap, till I'm down to the last piece of bait. Dropped for one last drift, got lots of taps from rubylips but no takers. Just as I'm about to reel up and reset for another drift, WHAM!!! Rod to the gunnel, drag peeling off. I realized it was coming up not heading for structure so I back off drag and let it run around. 4ft blacktip shark, hooked just in the lip. Got him yakside for a pic and even managed to get my circle hook back.

I have to say, this tiny little Avet is the same size as my calcutta 100 trout/red reel but packs some serious muscle. The rod also looks like a little bass fishing noodle stick but it's got some serious backbone to it. I did not get nearly as tired just holding the combo as I normally do with my other bottom rig.

My best day in the Gulf thus far,
Alex

Well done, Alex! I'm guessing your best snapper day, so it looks like that new combo works like a charm!!

Kreg,

It's a BAD little combo!!! I don't think I can ever touch a 4/0 and boat rod combo again.

Saw your car in the parking lot but didn't see you on the water as you were "over the horizon". Glad to meet you again as you were making your way back in and to hear your fishing stories. I am glad you posted the pics for all of us to see what can be done from a yak.

Nope. Lost a couple baits to pick-pockets but nothing for the ride in.
