Honestly, I think the technology is all the same. I've used the West Marine brand for a few years. When I've jumped in in shallow water and gotten it wet by mistake while remembering to screw in my drain plug, but forgetting I was wearing it, it worked. When I
jumped in after it was past expiration just to test it it worked both times.

I think the technology is all the same.

it's 3-3 for me.

It's a spring and a pellet that is supposed to dissolve when wet, then fire a bottle. Some are bigger for offshore use. But the simple technology works. Some have other things attached... Worth it? depends on how you fish I suppose.

I wear mine when I fish alone. I forget it's on even while wearing two remotes around my neck pretty soon after I leave the dock.

I do not use an auto inflate on a kayak though. I use a vest, or I'd buy a manual activated model.

Too much splashing around, or simply jumping into the surf or shallow water.

This. I just acquired one from academy for my birthday earlier this month. Mine is the Onyx brand and I love it so far. As stated above I barely notice it once i get launched. On the occasion my rod butt will catch the bottom strap, but it doesn't happen enough to cause discomfort. Definitely worth the coin. Top 3 things Life Vest, GPS, Paddle willing to spend money on those to ensure a safe trip.

Yepper...I'm gonna get me and Logan a couple of the manual inflate ones....I don't like wearing a PFD because of the bulk but I gotta show a good example fer Logan! When were in a calm area, I have no objections putting it behind me but would rather have a manual 1 to wear all the time!

I would second the manual inflate vest, which is what I wear now, for kayaks and canoes. I have had 2 automatic vests and both of them "went off" from the general wetness of those boats. First time I thought I had been shot...

I hated my old "fishing" PFD but this one (Mustang) is so comfortable that I put it on when I leave the house...

I read you will start sticking flatfish. I never gig @ night with out these vest. Also I like the ones with a light. If you fall over while gigging with someone it makes it easy for them to find you.

Maybe a little too much caution....I want to go home after having fun.
