probably just bad luck? this thread usually digresses into finger pointing. the next post will be about kayaks in the pass, and then the tired metaphor about no bicycles allowed on the highway, followed closely by "right of way doesn't matter if you're dead"

There is truth in all of it I suppose, but Jason is right. There is nothing you can do when people are smashing their boats into piers, bridges, ferry boats and the beach itself. I have 150+ fishing trips in my log over the last 30 months and haven't had a single close encounter with a boat either, for what its worth.

If you really want to cut down on the boat encounters, fish crappy weather, early morning and at night, and steer clear of the pass. Be ready to haul ass and lose anchors/fish. I don't believe there is any amount of bright colored stuff or lighting that will make a difference, but by all means try. Your kayak sticks about 8" above the waterline, so it is effectively invisible in any sea state. Maybe bright colored clothing and PFD is your best bet. I have also heard of people painting their paddle blades neon colors to wave for vis.

Boats seldom come close to me on the flats. First question that comes naturally to me is...were you in a bikini? Not being stupid, it's a good question lol.

That's funny bc that was the excuse that my husband used lol He said next time wear a garbage bag haha

I just wished people would pay more attention. Jet skiers cross over our lines all the time even though we have balloons tied to them. Guess the majority of our problems will end after we buy our boat on Monday. Fingers crossed!

And we do fish sunrise a lot but it's not always an option with kids Thanks for the ideas regarding paint for the oars. I appreciate the help!

I recommend getting out of the way when the big boats are coming your way. Your gonna get swamped either way.
Best advise is to stay away from the pass. Because the boats are throttling up for their long ride as they are leaving the pass. Some of the boats are gonna put out 4-5 foot swells

Bright colored yaks will be safer.
Some of the camo green and tan yaks are very hard to see

Use some type of flag please. Even having a flag won't keep the idiots away but normal boaters will see them.

She's talking about fishing on grass flats fellas. No need to stay out of the way of big boats. I guarantee its the bikini. Jet skiers are a different story...they really don't give a damn about any kind of fisherman/woman.

Seruously, a regular fishing shirt will prolly put an end to the boats getting too close on the grass flats thing. I can assure you, there is no flag or bright paddle or neon sign that is more visable on the water than a bikini top. We fishermen spot them from literally a mile away and they certainly have their own version of a gravitational pull...

You have the right of way which is no consolation if you get run over. Make sure you are easy to see - if you are paddling, maybe try a paddle with bright colored blades - they are visible a long way off. Make sure you have a whistle or other sound signal (air horn) and use it if you have to. If they get too close, take their picture and call the FWC - *FWC or #FWC. If you are carrying a handheld VHF, always a good idea, hail them on channel 9 or 16. Later, post a good description of the boat here...
