Default Way late Va kill

Well boys, I'm almost a month late posting it but I finally got some meat on the ground up here. This season was tough. I mean real tough. I hunted hard from October 2 to January 3, when the season ended. Up until 1/3, I had seen two, count em two deer from the stand. Both at 80+ yards, with a bow, for less than three seconds.

Last day of the season was pretty cold. I decided instead of sitting my usual morning routine, I'd switch it up and pull a 9-1 mid day sit. Walked into a stand I've been wanting to go to all season, but the section has been closed most of the year (hunting on base). Wife got me a mossy 500 slugster for Christmas, so I really wanted to break it in.

Nothing. For over 4 hours, squirrels. Not hide nor hair of a deer. At 12:57, I text my wife and said I'm climbing down. Started packing up, and I saw one running at about 75 yards from my right to left. Threw the gun up as it went behind some trees. When he popped out, he was at 60 yards coming straight at me. He spotted me and locked up. Only thing I could see what his head, so that's where he caught a 12 gauge slug between the eyes. At 12:58, I sent another text saying deer down.

He's small. 80 lb cow horn. But in a place where guys brag about fawns (literally), I'll take him. Can't wait for next year.

Oh okay those other two also have very low deer numbers. I know a few people through family that have hunted these and seen on multiple forums that their deer numbers are low and have hunted them with my dad when I was little (well just sat) and never saw anything. Tuff hunting when you don't see much deer. I bet that deer felt like a monster when you shot him lol

That's what's the most frustrating.... There's a ton of deer, but they stay where they can't be shot. Saw a monster 8 several times this year... Standing on the golf course. It's maddening to sit in the cold for hours and see nothing, then to get in the car and see 20 in ten minutes.

Or all the road kill in VA, I have never seen so many dead deer on the side of the road until I drove through west VA.... Seemed like there was one every mile or so.
