How many of y’all hunt from the ground and not in a blind? My climber needs to be replaced and I don’t have a suitable alternative or ground blind available. I was thinking about a camping chair and hiding behind a tree. Anyone ever done that and had success?
Me and the wife are currently on the ground next to a field, had 6 turkeys and doe and yearling in front of us for 30 minutes, she hunts from the ground only when bow hunting, no blind just natural cover
Oh sweet. Where are you located and what’s price? I am debating about getting a new climber, getting into saddle hunting, or just going no blind for this year and see how it goes
I hunt from the ground quite a bit. I don’t use a chair or anything. I just pick a tree to lean against with plenty cover which isn’t hard to find. Can’t say it’s super comfortable though
Iv been on the ground for 5 yrs. doubt I’ll ever go back up a tree. It takes a little thinking and helps to know which way deer generally travel but I feel like if I’m in the woods I can see further and adjusting my location and direction is easy. You do have to be still and I will usually lean up a few limbs around me to break up my outline. Also like to stick up a few cut palmettos, or cedar saplings. I’m usually in a camo chair or Turkey seat. I like to set up so the deer walk past me and I can get a quartering away shot. I always hunt with the crossbow and have learned that grunting is a mistake. Only times I’ve ever been busted was by big bucks walking straight toward me giving me no shot
Go with the Millineum Tree Seat. I gave 3 away 2 years ago to the winners of the hunting contest. Haven't heard any of them say if they like it. Maybe you could get a slightly used one cheap. A new one is around $70.
What about using the bottom portion of the tree climber as a seAt? Has anyone done that? I might try that till I can get a new climber or figure what I am gonna do
I tried one of the tree seats... it was ok but a little difficult to move quickly and quietly to a better spot. Trees were never in just the right spot
90% of my hunting is from the ground, and have been pretty successful, this is my 1st year with a turkey lounger, I’ve always just sat on ground and leaned against tree. But with the lounger, I can back it up into some bushes and not have to have a tree to lean back on.
Forget the blind, not necessary. Just my opinion, but plopping a blind up and sitting in a big new “blob” in the woods has potential of spooking a mature deer....
Just another opinion, I’ve used a millennium tree seat.... limited on where you can use it, and you still stick out like a sore thumb. I wouldn’t give you $5 for one.....
Play the wind, sit downwind/crosswind of where deer are traveling and you’ll have some opportunity. I know some people that refuse to hunt from the ground and believe they gotta be up in a tree, they’re wrong!! I’ve had deer so close to me on the ground I could hear em breathe! Play the wind, play the wind, move and play the wind! Good luck.
Yeah I use a cheap green Coleman folding chair with the canvas back and seat. I've made a strap for it. I can play the wind and hunt a field edge. Just get on the other side of a grown up fence row and you have a perfect hide.
I watched a nice buck last year look hard at the permanent box stand before stepping out about 20 yards from me. Didn't shoot it but could have. And have had does so close I could hear them breathe. Just a matter of playing the wind.
I've been busted a few times, mainly because I moved or the wind shifted. I'll never climb a tree again.
I sit all the time when I hunt where we have some of the uncomfortable metal ladder stands, my old fat ass can only handle so long in those. I'll get down, change the angle, sit on the ground and play the wind. Sometimes against a tree, sometimes in a chair, sometimes with a giley suite on. A couple of years ago, I had to yell at a cowhorn spike, he was about to step on me, no joke, I yelled and rolled right before he put his hoof down on my foot. I have been busted, I have been unnoticed, it's a challenge but as the guys have said, smart older deer learn where the tree stands are, notice new ground blinds, I grew up in the Northeast walking and sitting and watching ridges so maybe that's why I enjoy it
hunt from the ground a lot. I have one of the tree seats you do stand out a little bit so you gotta be careful with the set up but get in some cover and you can really sit comfortable and still. Have killed a bunch of bucks and a few turkeys from it. If you cant get a good tree to set it on then just any folding chair in a down tree top or in some thick bushed etc is better than just on the ground IMO for a few reasons. One is comfort....if you are comfortable you can sit longer and actually be still and not be squirming around and getting busted. Another is way better range of motion for a deer behind you or wrong handed at least for me I can turn and shoot way better from a seat or chair than I can waded down on the ground. And lastly just being up that little bit higher often will increase how far you can see and shoot by a lot as it always seems like to me I lose 30 yards of visibility in that 2ft between chair height and ground height.
but like said before you gotta get yourself hid which is the down side. It is way easier to hide sitting directly on the ground or on one of those really short turkey things as long as you can sit still which IMO is always in the top 3 most important things to killing good bucks.....wind, noise, and movement.
I love my climber and couldn't imagine sitting on the ground. Just seems like to much could go wrong. But I don't kill very many deer either, so there's that, lol
I like hunting from the ground, but I have never seen anything when I've tried. I have enough trouble sitting still in the tree so I'm sure I've been busted every time I've sat on the ground and not even known it. I always hear something behind me and can't help but look...
I hunt on Eglin. I buy a Palmetto Fond permit ($1.00) and cut/place them around my fold up stool. Ocassionally, I'll buy a Sand Pine permit ($1.00), cut one an use that for cammo. So far, I have taken a deer every year.
