Default Finally took a buck on the new lease - Conecuh Forest

Put my dad in a shooting house on a plot on the new lease. I walked down until I found a tree, it was already approaching 4pm and i had not scouted the area so I wasn't planning on much happening. I had to make so much noise because the area was so thick i had to chop my way through vines to get the climber on the tree. I could only see about 100 yards down a small road, no shooting lanes, everything is super thick and needs to be burned. I get settled in and do a bleat, grunt , rattle sequence and immediately i hear a buck tearing up either a tree or two bucks fighting, not sure if my rattle got them worked up or what. I hear it at direction 12 o'clock, then at 1, then it grunts at 3 o'clock, footsteps...then nothing for nearly 30 minutes. Wind is blowing hard and i hear noise over my left shoulder 8 o'clock, see horns and he is smelling the air so i take out my tinks spray and give him a mist of estrous that falls right down on his head! Gives me time to turn around and get him in my scope, yep, club legal spread and points - take the shot and i see him fall! Finally scored one at the new lease in Conecuh forest.

7pt, 15.5 spread, 155lbs

amazing that he was able to completely circle me and get down wind through some of the thickest thorns and woods imaginable. was horrible just dragging him out, how can they walk so quietly through that stuff?! Good thing I had the tinks spray or i think I would have been busted!

Good job! It is rather amazing how they are able to quietly move through that stuff.

Good one. Sometimes I think that a good majority of good bucks are killed the first time you sit in a new stand. The audible from the buck indicates that you have a good buck/doe ratio in there. Circling downwind....classic big buck behavior. So thick that he couldn't see you but knew his nose would do the job. They do have a way of getting through quiet because of trails they have been using but I had a buck coming through a thicket, following a doe and he was dragging vines and so forth, making all kinds of noise just before he popped out. She could slip through but his rack was giving him some issues. My first Pope and Young.

Any animal on public land is a trophy, that's a dream! Great buck.
