Default Buck and doe put on a show

I've never seen the actual "breeding" part of the rut until today. Looking out my office window at the Panama City Navy Base, I watched the deed. After it was done, she walked off with her tail high, and wide and white. They kinda slow walked off with her in the lead and him tailing closely behind, but not chasing her. I thought they were gone, but they came around the building and she wedged herself between a building and a big Trane A/C unit. He parked himself on the ground in front of her about 6' away and kept vigilant and cleaned himself. He got up once around noon and turned towards her and laid back down. Around 1pm, she got up and let him have his way again. Then she went back behind the A/C and he laid back down on the ground where he was.

I've always kinda known a single doe with her tail held high was probably a hot doe whether or not a buck was chasing her. So today confirmed that.

It also confirmed the tending phase of the rut, when a buck hooks up with a hot doe, he doesn't leave her side for a while. Today, if you were hunting that buck, he was with her from first light until I left work at 2pm....he didn't move more than 50' all day.

Picture is a little grainy, but you get the idea.

Really cool to have seen that today and I feel that I learned something. Fascinating creatures these whitetails.

This is what's referred to as the "lock down" phase of the rut. Can make you think the buck you've been watching all year has been killed! It's a relief to have them show back up on cameras.....

Saw "the deed" being done for the first time this year also. Thirty feet from where I'm sitting at my computer in broad daylight.
