Default New To Diving and Looking for Gear Advice

Guys I will be starting my dive class hopefully this week, and Im looking for advice on a good all-around mask that will last me a while but that I will be happy using for some time. Also Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of spear guns and lengths to look into. Ill be doing most of my spear diving within 60ft of water and mostly bays and intracoastal waterways (docks pilings etc.) Thanks for the advice! and any other tips will be great to!

Find a mask that fits correctly and buy a polespear.

Fit is the #1 priority when you are picking out a mask. You could find the coolest mask out there, but be miserable when it leaks the entire dive. As for a personal recommendation, I tend to lean toward lower-volume, frameless style masks, with a black skirt. They cut down on glare and are easier to clear.

As for starting out with spearfishing... I'd agree with starting with a polespear (6' should be fine). That would be your best bet around piers and such. If you are heading out in a boat often, I'd move toward a good starter gun like a 42" AB Biller. Those are pretty easy guns to get started on and will continue to be a good gun to keep around even if you upgrade.

I'm pretty sure docks and pilings are off limits to spear fishing, you might want to check the regulations on that though.

Ditto! Been there, done that, and very satisfied w/ MBT. Also have the low profile mask...because it FIT well and has great VISIBILITY for my facial features. MBT, and any other worthwhile dive shop, will steer you in the RIGHT direction on eqmt selection. MBT will also trade it out if you're not satisfied how it worked once you used it.
Good Luck, you're gonna love the SCUBA experience!

I was recently in your position.....Mask that fits correctly and is comfortable. I have a frameless and I love it. And a pole spear. Once you get comfortable with the pole spear, then consider moving to a gun.

Also, go to MBT......
