Default GoPro goes black

I just bought a GoPro Hero 3 Black edition and used it for the first time on three dives this weekend and about 2:00 into each video, it just goes black (Is that why they call it the black edition? lol). The sound is still there in the video, but no video action on the screen. Has anyone else ever run into this?

Wow, never heard of that before.
I had a cheap one crap out on me while on vacation in PR, all my picture files were there, but I couldn't open or view all of them. we even paid a computer repair business to try and recover them and could not.

Are you using a good quality SD card?

Thanks for the reply coolbluestreak. I am using a SanDisk Ultra 32GB card that met the minimum read rates that they recommended from GoPro. It is almost like the video connection is loose or something, then the video part goes black and just plays sound. It is a shame too because we had close encounters with a few sharks that I wanted to see on video.

I know it may sound silly, but can you duplicate the problem on dry land?
I would:
verify camera settings with the manual
try it once more above water

if it still doesn't work, I would try a different SD card if you have one.

Where did you purchase it from, you may be better off exchanging it for a new one?

Gopro should have a 1 year limited warranty for manufacturer defects in case the store won't give you a refund.

I looked around on their website and while it did not specifically cover this topic, I took their advice on VLC as the playback media and it worked like a charm. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond and offer suggestions, coolbluestreak. Here are some stills from that video this weekend.

Thank you, aquatic argobull. It does appear to be the playback media and resources on my computer. If that turns out not to be the case, I will check with GoPro on that warranty. Again, thanks guys.

Good to hear! Didn't think about that, you probably didn't have the video codec with your player.

Make sure you update the firmware on the camera.... they almost never ship with the newest version installed.
Download it from the gopro site for free. Unzip the folder, and drag all the contents onto your camera's card. Follow the directions and its pretty easy.

Depending on which format you are shooting in - a lot of players will not be able to handle the footage. The black edition is capable of recording in some pretty advanced codecs and bit rates.
I have tested a few of the higher bit rates....and I'll need a newer computer to be able to edit them in real time! The standard 1080 works very well for now though.
