Default DAN signal tube

DAN signal tube http://www.scubatoys.com/store/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=Dan_Signal_Tube

What do you think about this item? It cost $45 and comes with storm whistle signal mirror aqnd chemical light stick. Is there something better. What about a signal device/horn. Is the dive alert any good?? Just picking up a few more things before next weekend.

I have the Dive Alert which I purchased in 1992. It can be heard over a mile. Does not operate underwater. There is also the scub alert which works on the surface and underwater. The surface range is not as good as on the dive alert.

A mirror and a sausage are also helpful during the day when you have drifted away from the boat and and in high seas. A chemical light stick is normally used for identification underwater. If you are diving at night, you can use your flashlight as a signal while on the surface.

Default RE: DAN signal tube

I carry my safety tube(the cheaper ones), and have a whistle rolled up inside it but still tied off to the clip. I have seen the DAN ones with all the extra accessories, but don't know how great it would be for the price with all the extra's. The cheaper tubes have a clear sleeve that you can slide a chem light into.I don't know how much, compared to the DAN one, it would cost to just get a cheaper safety sausage, plastic whistle, and chem light (i had the whistle layin around)...if you went that route the only thing you wouldn't have is a signal mirror. BUT my setup rolls all together and just looks like a safety sausage until you unroll it, crack the chem light, and stick it in the sleeve.

The only time i've used a chem light on a sausage was for shorenight dives when you're going to a specific location multiple time (a.k.a. A marker bouy/light) So I don't know how effective it would be if you were to surface and need it to signal (hopefully you have your dive light and a small back up to use insteadthough!!!)
