Default Solid First Trip of the Year

Headed out of Billy Goat Hole on Friday, May 18th in hopes of getting some AJs and triggers on a 60 mile offshore trip. We had a crew of Fred, Dustin, Mitchell, Matt, and a newcomer Hunter who was wanting to get acclimated with his dive equipment again after being in college for a few years. Headed offshore with seas of 1-2 and winds out of the northeast at around 10 knots. First stop was on an oil rig about 60 miles south of dauphin island. The plan was to try to shoot some big jacks, but after discovering that the bigger of the jacks were in about 200 feet of water we elected not to pull the trigger on them. I got to about 170 feet on the first dive, which is my deepest dive to date and could see the bigger of the jacks below me. I lack the experience and the mindset to shoot a 60-80 jack in water of that depth. Instead, we shot several triggers and a scamp and elected to move onto another rig in hopes of finding AJs in more shallow water. The AJs were definitely there, but they were lacking the size we wanted so we just shot a couple of 30 pounders and headed to more shallow water in hopes of finding black snapper and triggers. And we did. Vis was terriffic all day. I should have taken more and better pictures, but here are a few from the trip. Overall, another wonderful day on the water with some good friends and we were able to stick a few fish. Oh, and whoever decided that red snapper were potentially endangered is absolutely outside of their mind. I thought I was going to have to shoot some just to keep them from knocking my mask off, because they were so thick.

That's a fat mango (black snapper). How did their numbers compare to the numbers of red snapper?

Thanks for the post and stay safe out there.

I only saw black snapper on one dive, and they were still vastly outnumbered by the ARS. I'd say 50:1 in favor of the ARS.
