The Reef Environment Education Foundation and Escambia County Marine Resource Division will host an Invasive Lionfish Collecting and Handling Workshop, Monday, October 28, in room 104 of the Escambia County Central Office Complex, 3363 West Park Place.

From 6 to 8 p.m., divers, fishers and ocean enthusiasts are encouraged to attend to learn about the increasing lionfish crisis.

Workshop topics include the background of the lionfish invasion throughout our oceans including the Gulf of Mexico, ecological impacts, collecting tools and techniques and more. REEF Communications Manager Keri Kenning will also speak on the subject.

I was unable to attend. Did anyone go? What was covered? I heard it was a waste.

There was quite a turnout..... recognized quite a few people from all the dive shops in the area.
Seemed to be plenty of recreational divers there as well.

I wasn't expecting to get much out of it....but the Presentation that REEF put on was very informative....and there were actually some things that I didn't know!

It was also a valuable opportunity to talk with sections of our dive community that I would not ordinarily bump into... something we need to do more of if we are to get any traction on the lionfish thing.

I know of at least one plan that came out of it....hopefully to be implemented soon....so stay tuned!

Thanks for the update. I wanted to go, it just didn't work out. I didn't expect miracles, but (almost) anything is progress at this point.
