Default Late July Spearfishing advise

Traveling to Pensacola Beach for a few days and want to spearfish in the 60-80' range. I have all the public numbers near the pass and was going to try to pick one of those. I've never been diving in the area so any suggestions on places to go or more importantly places to avoid?

Also what's the most preferred dive shop in the area?

Anything else I should know for the area?

Serious question: How afraid are you of sharks?

Spearfishing in this area, on public spots, you will see shark(s). I dont know how experienced you are but look at some of the videos posted here.

For dive shops you have MBT and Dive Pros. Both are on the same side of town and they are both good.

Sharks don't bother me too bad, I appreciate it.

Do the public numbers hold fish or are they overfished?

The last couple of dives I have been on I have not seen any shooter fish on the public spots. Could just be me, but I have not had alot of luck this year.

Import all of the public numbers you can find into your GPS and be prepared to bounce a lot. We pretty much exclusively live boat do a lot of solo dives because the reefs are often small (army tanks, coops, and pyramids). If you get down there and don't see anything to shoot, come back to the boat and don't waste your gas.

I haven't had the shark problems others talk about, but definitely keep your eyes open. I started spearfishing in south Florida where we had some serious shark problems and our solution was always lift bags. If the fish is gone then the sharks will pretty much leave you alone.

You can always get a meal from any public spot IF you are not fussy. Spadefish small legal game fish are there. 3 barges, Gilcrest rubble and a string of other public listed spots west of Gilcrest. all within 7 miles fromf the pass less than 2 miles from shore.

Last weekend after diving Gilcrest: in 45 minutes one could have had a very decent meal based on the dozen lionfish, half dozen flounder, and various other "eating" fish we saw. Patience, and hunting techniques put food in the cooler. It's not always about 25lb snapper (lol)
