Default Labor Day Destin, FL Lionfish

Went out to find some lionfish (per usual) and maybe some lobster and other game fish. Had a great day with glass like conditions 20 miles out. Needed to grab a few live lionfish for an invasive species exhibit and then we went to town on clearing the reef. Shot around 2 dozen lions (not as many as Firefish and Company) and managed a trigger and a couple decent mangroves to finish the day. Viz was 50 ft but the water temp was a cool 67 degrees.

Here is the video:

Very nice. Is that a pvc tube you are putting them in? How do you pull your gig out of the fish?

Saw this last night on spear fishing show. Looks like a safer alternative to the open bag.

Yes, its a PVC tube called a Zookeeper. There is a funnel with slits in it that allow you to push the lionfish into the unit and when you pull the spear out it keeps the lionfish in place. Then all you gotta do is shoot another and do it over again.... The owner of the company is a stand up guy and has really made a great product.

It was already mentioned but the zookeeper was featured on the show Scuba Nation a couple nights ago (havent seen episode yet).

I dissected all of the fish this afternoon and found that 90% were Males and every one of them had full stomachs. Biggest fish was just shy of 15.5in. never know what you will find in these suckers. Very interesting stuff.
