Default Just moved to Pcola, looking for spearfishing mentors!

Hey guys!

I'm in the Coast Guard and just moved to Pensacola for flight school, traditionally I'm a scuba diver but I really want to get more into spearfishing. Looking to start smaller and work my way up, so if anyone is going on any near-shore lionfish hunts/shallow free dives or anything let me know! I have 2 jet skiis with cargo room so let's go get some fish! Have a good one!

Welcome and thanks for your service. I had a buddy in the CG based out of Demopolis, AL, he has since got out. I never got into spearfishing around here but have used Hawaiian sling for flounder at the east pass in Destin. If you go stick to the west jetty and hug it and you will see some $!*T.
Good luck.

Neil .. are you looking to spear as freediver, or as scuba? If lionfish is your goal: I'd have to recommend scuba ..

After you get a few more posts PM me your contact info and I'll invite you along some time. Been trying to get a few regulars together to shoot fish.

Some of the key skills are:
1. be a good diver: know deco limits, air consumption
2. be able to free ascend/descend along a buoy as visual aid or without
3. be ready to multi-task in the water
4. know when to say no or just not push a dive/task
5. have gear sorted and make sure it's fit for purpose
6. start small and work your way up

A quote that resonates with me goes something like "someday I hope to be the diver that I think I am today."

Neil,

I'm trying to basically do the same thing as you. I've got a 17.5ft center console that could accommodate a dive but I'd have to rent all the gear for a day. I'd rather start off with a few trips with experienced divers to learn some basics first. Btw, any chance you did/are doing IFS in Milton? I was an instructor there for a long time and know a ton of Coasties.

I'm looking to do either! I don't have my own scuba gear so I'd just rent from MBT most likely. I'll probably end up splitting time between both, i like shooting the spear gun more but I passionately hate lionfish, so it balances out haha. I also see you have a world cat! I'm wicked jealous, I just checked out a 2018 WC 23SD over at Destin Sunrise and almost bought it on the spot, most versatile boat I've ever seen!

Thanks for the advice!! I'm a bigger guy so I suck O2 a lot faster than most, gotta work on that haha. I went to the beach to practice shooting/reloading my Mako the other day, so I'll chalk it up to a work in progress!

Cool glad to hear we're in the same boat! I'd have to rent gear too, maybe we'll get a discount from MBT or something. Yeah I'm up at AMS right now doing IFS, just beach solo'd on Friday; I have Mark Bryan for my instructor!

I do believe that both Dive Pros and MBT offer 10% to military so bring your CaC

That's awesome. Tell Mark to take us out on his sailboat! You have a great instructor (and guaranteed weekends off, haha). Well, I just got sucked in on Saturday at MBT's big clearance sale and bought all my scuba gear. Only thing I need now is a good gun and enough money left over to put gas in the boat.
