Default Input Needed! Spearfishing/Freediving Shop

Hey everyone,
I'm currently in the process of planning a spearfishing and freediving shop in the Destin area. It's not 100% just yet but it is moving that direction quickly! I have a few ideas beyond just a retail location. Some ideas include becoming a physical forum where everyone can meet/network, providing access to the newest technology and products relevant to the freediving and spearfishing, conduct training and seminars, organizing local spearfishing derbies and competitions and if there is enough interest I would like to organize out of area guided group spearfishing trips. I'm not interested in offering scuba equipment and services, but still cater to the scuba spearfishing needs.

My question to you all is what your level of interest would be given its location, alternative on-line shopping options, etc. Would you drive to a shop instead of ordering a new wetsuit on-line? Any ideas or input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Mike

To me it all boils down to customer service. I live in Alabama and drive an hour to dive pros because they have good prices and great service. I would rather spend few more bucks have the product in front of me and get great service. Plus if I get the chance to meet more people that love the sport like i do even better

I've gotten some encouraging feedback on SB, does anyone know of anyone spearfishing commercially around here? Someone on that forum made the recommendation to carry gear for them for off season business.

I'll throw out some random thoughts for whatever it is worth.

I live in Pensacola. I dive, spearfish, and hunt for bugs all year. It is pretty much "raining gear" whenever I am in the water , and I am very rough on gear, so I am always shopping for replacements. I tend to buy used Riffe spearguns, rather than buy new ones, and I like to buy replacement tips, line, stringers, etc. in bulk.

From a spearfishing perspective, I feel we are served pretty well by the 4 dive shops here in Pensacola. To be honest, I doubt I would drive over to Destin for parts or gear unless it was an emergency. I would make the trip if you hosted interested meetings/education or organized spearfishing outings in Destin.

Speargun bands and good icepick styled spear tips are pretty expensive. I have guns with 7 bands all the way down to two-band guns. If you can find a way to offer sturdy bands and icepick tips at a better price, then I may become a regular customer. I might order them from you and have them shipped, rather than drive down to your store.

I wish you luck in your new venture!

Thanks again, and whackum, I am definitely going to carry all the replacement pieces you mentioned. It won't be too long before I'll jump into online sales but in the meantime if someone wanted to order over the phone I would ship too.

I think with the sport gaining momentum it's a solid idea. Hate to say it but the scuba shops don't carry what's needed. Except SUUNTO certified techs. I'm willing to make a drive just so I can be able to try my gear on! I think SB said enough haha figured I'd chime in on here as well. Good luck sure I'll see you in march!
