Get at least a 6 ft. pole spear with a tip just like you'd use on a spear gun. i.e. two wings/barbs. New will cost you a bit more than $50 these days with a good tip. The tip will be about $25-$30 by itself for a good one, and the pole spear around $30 ish. You can spend much, much more, but that's a good start. If you get a fiberglass (most shops have them) remember to give the pole a twist when you load it as this will keep it straight and improve accuracy. Think of rifling; if you just stretch the band and don't twist the pole spear it will bow on you. I always carry more than one when diving.
