Default Hooked

I just moved to Pace and have had my open water certification for a few years now but haven't dove in awhile. Back in December the wife and I went to Jamaica and I was able to link up with a couple locals for some spearfishing. All I can say is I am HOOKED! I'd love to get rigged up to do some hunting here if anyone could point me in the right direction to get geared up. I'll need dive gear too , but the wife has me on a tight leash, budget wise. Thanks !

MBT is spearfishing central around here. They are on barrancas just west of outcast bait and tackle and just east of the old Cory intersection.

Do yourself a HUGE favor, go to any and all of the above mentioned shops and ask questions of ALL of them. EDUCATE yourself BEFORE buying gear, you'll never regret that decision.

Remember, every shop has a biased interest in selling you their gear, and I can assure you each and everyone will tell you it's because it's the "best"

I've shot "the best" and what other folks would call "the worst" and I've actually killed more big fish with "the worst".

check used prices too! Craigslist and Ebay can become your best resource!
I recently purchased two regulators. As soon as I had them I sent them to the original manufacturer and asked them to go through them with a fine tooth comb.

they came back looking as good as any new one right out of the show room and I still managed to save well over 50% of a new purchase price, even with the shipping and rework charges.

the important point of buying used or online, you have to understand what you're getting so there's where the education becomes important.

good luck and welcome to a lifetime addiction! (at least if you don't get Skeert)

Thanks of all the input guys and Billybob that's about the best advice I could've asked for. I can't wait to get on some fish here in Florida. We didn't kill much of anything fancy other than some large stonefish in Jamaica but its in my blood now

get up and go with some of us local guys who have the local knowledge. what works in Jamaica, or for that matter even Louisianna may or may not be the right idea for here.
I know many of the spearfisherman in Louisiana, for instance, shoot a riding rig. I'ts not such a feasible idea here unless you're going to target large fish around huge structure.
many of my diving buddies in Panama City, swear by the freeshaft but for the life of me, I can't make myself shoot that way.
I sometimes have room on my boat, as well as many others on this forum. We split expenses and if 4 of us go (self included) it runs about $60 each.
If you ever go with me, tell the wife to worry about you after 2:00AM...otherwise we're probably out having fun.
