Default first time ever

I will be in Destin fl. for my first time ever on the gulf and would like to do some spearing. I will be bringing my 18' jon boat and will be bringing my scuba gear. Any advise would be great

First piece of advice, if your 18 footer is like the jon boats I know of (flat bottom, low sided, square nosed) stay away from Destin pass...and don't venture out into the gulf. Not saying it can't be done, but if you've never done it, Destin Pass can be quite unforgiving, especially with boat traffic that it has this time of year. I'd encourage you to post up and hope for a ride with someone, at least the first time, so as to get a feel for what the gulf is all about.

You could perhaps shoot some fish in the bay off your boat, but visibility would be quite a bit lower in the bay than outside.

In FL it's illegal to spearfish around jetties and it's illegal to spearfish around Destin Bridge, which you might be tempted to do (I think...perhaps someone could confirm on the Bridge part...I know the jetties are illegal)

There are a few artificial reefs out of Destin that are relatively close to the pass that people sometime spearfish on, even from Kayak, but again, if this is your first trip, I'd encourage you to stay out of the Gulf on that small of a boat. Post up a picture of your boat, maybe I'm misinterpreting your boat and I'm way off, because some 18ft boats could handle it. I'd encourage you to catch a ride the first time. Most of our bottom is just barren sand so if you don't have a GPS and some confirmed numbers, you could be wasting your time anyway. Sorry if this seems too negative. Just want to help keep a fellow diver and spearfisherman safe.

billybob is correct, fishing is allowed from the bridge so it is illegal to spear there. Even if it were legal, very dangerous with the amount of boat traffic

May not be a bad idea to hook up on a charter if you cant get a ride.
