Default Dive report 8-25-11

I was lucky enough to get out yesterday for some diving. It has been a slow summer for me and I was eager to get wet again. I had heard some reports of bad viz and was a little apprehensive but looking forward to the narc regardless.

There weren't too many hitches in the plan and everything went fairly well with the exception of a seasick crew member that toughed it out like a champ. I won't mention any names.

The plan was to focus on lobster on natural bottom in depths from 100 to 130 feet. We wound up doing that about half the trip and artificial reefs in varying forms the other half.

The water was a concerning green out to 30 miles. Moon jellies were abundant in all ranges of distance but thicker out to 25 miles and down to about 60 feet. After 25 miles the moons thinned out but still there down to about 30 feet. They really have no affect on diving anyways unless you take one to the face (or the back of the head) they are fairly easy to dodge as long as you see them.

The viz was great on bottom with a ceiling about 60 feet. You'll need good lights though since the natural light was blocked by the snot to that altitude in the depths from 100 to 130. I saw more snapper, big ones 10 to 20 pounders, on the natural bottom than I have ever seen there. I saw a few lion fish and plenty of Mangos. Water temps on bottom required a full 3mil for me and as the day progressed it got cooler and cooler at depth. Do not hesitate to wear a full 3 mil even as hot as the air temp is, you will appreciate it on bottom.

The hunting was good. My share was plenty for me and mine and there will be some good eats around here for the next few nights. We had 4 divers on board. Diving and shooting in pairs. Here is Jeff with a nice Spiney. A 23 1/2 inch 8 Lb trigger. And an equal share for me.

Go get some. Be safe.
