Default Destin diving/shooting 3-8-2012

Decided to head over to Destin to test ride my buddies new boat. After spending Friday and Saturday working out the kinks we decided to head out to the Liberty ship to do some diving and shooting. Got to our spot early Sunday afternoon and was surprised to see no other boats. Made our first dive and were met with AJ’s throughout the water column but none were big enough to shoot. There were also a good number of gags were hanging out just looking at us, not a care in the world. Can’t wait for July! Managed to find a bunch of large mangrove snapper to bring home for dinner and also removed a few lionfish. It was a perfect Easter Sunday with friends on the water! I shot some video (a little long), see link below.

Well, I have only done a few dives this year in the area and I have seen them every dive. I'm doing a study on them and am trying to collect as many as possible. I dont think there will be a shortage of lionfish shot this year in the northern Gulf. I shot mine on my second dive when I forgot to push play on my GoPro...ill have footage of em next time for sure.

I was at the TimberHoles a couple weeks ago and they were just piled up. It is ridiculous how many there are.

Well, a game bag works well but if they are big enough you can use a stringer. Ive also, on occasion, put them in my BC pockets since they are so thick. The spines can put a hurtin on you but if you are careful (like with any fish) you shouldn't run into any problems. If you to get stuck by one of the lions you should run the wound (probably your hand) under warm/hot water. This helps to denature the protein based poison. A good source of hot water is the 'pee' from your engine.
its crazy how fast these guys can spread!
