Default 2017 Dream Weaver Bud Light report

Fished hard all weekend during the bud light. Saturday was forecast rough and it was. 12 mile buoy shows steady 3 foot sea state which means there are going to be some bigger ones mixed in...and there were.

Couldn't find any live bait Saturday so we headed slowly offshore with frozen bait. We were in the general rodeo and the $50 and $100 snapper calcuttas. I used to love king fishing but I just got beat too often and priced out of it so I haven't done it seriously in years. Anyhow, we slogged out to the SE to mostly snapper fish in the 15-20 mile range. The boat was rocking pretty good due to the sea but there wasn't any current so holding up was pretty easy. Bottom fishing was decent but top water was slow. Sharks were getting every third snapper from us before we could get them to the boat. We managed to catch a 22 pound snapper and an 11lb bonita. Unfortunately, we decided that the bonita wasn't big enough and cut it up for bait. It would have been 1st or 2nd. This is about the eighth time we have either not weighed a fish that would have placed, or let a place fish go, or cut a place fish up for bait. I would say live and learn but we haven't done well at the learning part.

Went to scales Saturday and had the biggest snapper of the day. I got interviewed by channel 3 and got hooked up with a mic and everything. I guess I got a sound bite on the 6 oclock news because a friend of mine sent me a picture of their TV with me on it. I never saw it though.

Sunday was WAY nicer and we got live bait from Tony on the bait boat so we headed out around the edge. Again bottom fishing was decent but no action to speak of up top. There was also about a 2knt current running from the NNE which made holding up more of a chore. Found a 15lb gag on the edge and a 33.1lb cobia. There was another cobia about the same size swimming around the boat for a while but we didn't catch him. After fishing the edge, we bounced a bit farther offshore to fish deeper water for grouper. It took us an hour to catch a single yellow edge grouper that was 10lbs. We came back in to some scamp areas and got a couple of smaller ones and one that was near 10lbs and called it a day. Little storm on the way in Sunday but nothing like Saturday's weather without a storm.

At the end of it all, we ended up with 2nd and 3rd place grouper and 3rd in the $50 snapper calcutta. The Fullers came in and swept the snapper board, took top grouper, top dolphin and maybe a couple of other places. They could probably open a tackle store with all the prizes they won. We missed the cobia board by a few ounces. There was a terrible gaff shot by yours truly that made the boat look like a murder scene and probably cost us a 3rd place finish on the cobia and we for sure cut up a place bonito. However, we had a great time with the tournament. The people that have ran it for the last 30 years or so have turned it over to Pensacola sports. I have always liked this tournament and I have some kind of idea what it takes to put it on. I appreciate what has been done in the past with it and I look forward to what happens in the future as well.

I watched the leaderboard all weekend and saw that you were leading Snapper. I remembered the name from this forum. I know it's tough to get knocked out during the last hour or half hour. My wife and I entered this tournament for our first time last year. I was leading in Grouper and 3rd with Mingo. Wife was holding in 3rd for Grouper. The last half hour of the last day completely knocked us all the way off of the board.

11.31. Not a huge bonito but the biggest one weighed all weekend. They seem to get to about 13lbs and stop growing except for one in one hundred or so. We only caught 2 all weekend and they both grabbed grouper or snapper baits on the way up or down.
