Default 2010 Queen of Kings

HUGE thank you to all who fished and the local businesses that stuck with it and McGraw Insurance for stepping up and really saving the tournament this year.

Bill Vilona from the News Journal wrote a great article so I'll let his work stand as my report.

Troy Mabire wanted to take his daughter, Ashlyn, fishing in June, but the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico cancelled plans. "She was so upset about the oil, she didn't want to do it,'' he said. He coaxed her to compete in Saturday's rescheduled Queen of Kings Ladies King Mackerel Tournament. It turned into a special memory.

With her father guiding the boat Board Room, Ashlyn, 15, a Pace High student caught a winning king mackerel. She joined with two other female anglers on their crew to claim the $2,000 prize as the top team in the third annual event that culminated last night with the weigh-in and awards party at Paradise Bar and Grill on Pensacola Beach.

"It means a lot to me and my daughter to be able to do it," Troy Mabire said. "That's what I grew up doing. That's what I've been wanting to take her to do."

Colleen Doyle, who also caught a king mackerel, along with Jennifer McCrary and Patrick Nelson, all Pensacola area residents, were part of the five-angler team that weighed a combined 39.4-pounds of king mackerel.

The boat Tide in Knots finished second with 24.2 pounds, followed by Buck Wild/RX Cape was third (23.4) and South Again Charters was fourth. Buck Wild won the amberjack jackpot division.

Only six boats competed in the rescheduled tournament, a big drop from the 28 last year and the 26 boats in the 2008 tourney debut.

Tournament director Joe Zwierzchowski knew there would be few boats. The anglers who competed, however, thanked him for having it. The tournament was originally scheduled in June.

"We did our best to have it then, but it wasn't an option," Zwierzchowski said. "They shut down state and federal waters."

He figured the tournament wouldn't be staged again until next year. Several weeks ago, McGraw Insurance Services and Nationwide, offered to sponsor the event and provide an outlet for competition. Paradise Bar and Grill offered some additional prize money as well as being the host site.

"It's just a good way to give back to the anglers. These guys spend a lot of money on fuel, boat and the whole nine yards," Zwierzchowski said. "I was glad we could do it."
