Venice Tuna and Wahoo
<P align=left>OPEN BOATS! We have both boats open the weekend of the 28th and atleast one boat open any day you want it!
As many of you know, Venice is home to many great captains! Many of them are know nation wide, so it is hard for us to say fish with us, we are better than the next guy because that is hard to pull off when you are talking about captains in Venice Louisiana! These guys know what they are doing and they do it well! I have had the pleasure of fishing with most of them over the years and lucky for me, some of them have rubbed off on me! We try to give you what you expect and what you pay for and for those of you who choose to fish with us, we are very thankful! You are the reason that we pay the bills and keep the boats moving! We take pride in what we do and you can be sure that when you run with Capt Gray or myself, we will do what it takes! We fish hard and we put in the extra effort to make sure your trip is one that is remembered!!! We keep our boats in good shape, we always have good equipment and for the days I dont have good equipment, I borrow it from Capt Gray!! HA HA! (Hang in there Gray, my new Tiagra's are on order! ! !)
We have been able to bring good fish back to the dock in the last few weeks, I hope the action stays hot!
Saturday ! ! !
I pulled away from the dock at 6 AM with Stacey Saucier's crew in from Mississippi. These guys knew what they wanted to catch! FISH!! BIG FISH! I told Stacey, No Problem! Thinking the whole time, I hope no problem!!
The stars must have been alined pretty good becasue our first wahoo bait to hit the water was hit by a train. As we got him close to the boat, the second line began to scream. I thought to myself, this was too easy! Put the lines out again, trippled up! We landed the first two but the last fish was a little stubborn, it wanted to take its time getting to the boat. After the fish made it to the surface, I knew why! Atleast 100 pounds. I walked to the side of the boat in time to see the hooks pull from its mouth! I am still sick about that one!
After going five for seven on big hooters, figure we would try to put red meat in the boat! We were able to get set up on a drift and it did not take long to put a couple of huge blackfin in the boat. With all of the kings and sharks, it took a little while to find the big yella's but thanks to Capt Troy, he put us on the spot. We were able to boat three big yellowfin and one small one! Even put an AJ in the boat! One of the best days I have had on the water all winter.
Capt Gray had a crew out Saturday and after he put a serious hurtin on some wahoo that Wednesday, he decided to make a run back to his secret spot. I was talking to him on the radio and he was getting plenty of knockdowns but everything was going wrong! Pulled hooks on some, some broke off, some never hooked! Just one of those days!
He was able to get on a top water blackfin bite and put some nice tuna in the boat in Frenzy poppers! (what a killer bait!!!) After putting a wahoo or two in the boat, he moved over to where I was to catch a few yellowfin. I was leaving when he got there but somehow still managed to almost catch me on tuna! I have to watch this guy close!!!
After a run of bad luck, Capt Gray still ended the day with a very impressive board of fish!
Sunday I had the pleasure of fishing with Jake from Lafayette. Now the last time Jake was in Venice to fish with me, my boat was in the shop so a friend was kind enough to rent me his boat! Everything was going good til we lost the lower unit in South Pass. After that, Jake was really ready to catch tuna!!
We left Venice Marina, ran in the thick fog for a while. After being in the gulf for a while, we were able to make up a little time! Tried pulling for wahoo with no luck. Moved over to the tuna, put a couple of beautiful blackfin in the boat right off the bat then nothing! Well almost nothing! About a million kings and a few big sharks. I was still trying to find the fish as Capt Peace was heading home with a full box of tuna! I told you these guys are good!!! Peace told me to stay at it, we would find them!! He was right!! After drifting far, we got on the tuna so good that if we could have put ten lines in the water, we would have hooked up! At one time, Aaron couldnt get one fish unhooked before another was hitting the deck! We hooked in to a couple of big fish! The lady on board strapped into the first one and done one heck of a job fighting that big yellowfin! She would not give up the rod! She said "This is my fish" She hand fed it, she set the hook and she reeled it in! I would say that it was her fish!! Great job! Nice fish! We were able to get into them
one more time before heading north!! After it was all said and done, Jake's crew had caught a nice load of fish!!
The wahoo this week were all caught on Bombers, Braids and Stretch 30's! We will be testing a new bait over the next few weeks on wahoo! The bait itself is not new, just new for us and Venice! Also bally hoo is always a good choice for hooters! You can rig it naked, or with an islander!
We are still using live bait for amberjacks, along with shimano and bomber jigs!
Most tuna were caught on Frenzy poppers and red meat! Its hard to beat the meat!! Tuna cant pass up a good chunk if bonita! When drift fishing, make sure you baits are falling with your chum! Some days you will need to step down on leader and hook size!! Smaller bait = smaller hooks! We have caught tuna on live bait as well! Again, try to size the bait up with the hook!! We ofter catch tuna over 100 pounds on a small 5/0 frenzy circle hook! Dont be afraid to use small hooks!! They will hold!
As most of you know, we have plenty of open dates! We would love to take you for a day of awesome fishing in Venice, Louisiana! What else could be better than landing tripple digit tuna and wahoo??? Nothing, that's what!! Gray and I are sitting on ready, just give us a call! The 27th, 28th and 29th are all open right now!! Both boats!! Give us a call!!
