Venice Offshore- Pelagic Charters
Venice Offshore Journal- Pelagic Charters
Quite a long stretch this time, three weeks with no traffic lights, our morning “rush” is generally at the fuel dock and only last a few minutes. Don’t get me wrong, you can still get the “bird” down here but it probably won’t be from someone drinking a star buck’s latte screaming at you with a cell phone in their ear. All in all, Venice is a cool place.
I wont even bother trying to recollect a blow by blow from every trip but rather just simply state that the fishing has been outstanding, with tuna taking the spotlight more days than others. The average fish has been hovering right at 60lbs with a few pushing right at 100lbs making light tackle a blast to play with. Live bait is plentiful right now on most rigs and any piece of grass that is slightly larger than a hubcap will have a ton underneath. Baby hard tails, tiny rainbow runners and threads have been the poison as of lately. It’s nice to hit your first spot with a couple of hundred little morsels and watch tuna sky before you even pull the reigns back. 60lb floro and 5/0 circles have been doing the trick with some days 80lb floro and they eat it just the same. The fish have been very active on the surface eating whatever they get their chops on. I inspected a tuna belly the other day and it was full of flyers, hard tails, squid, tinkers and I think a 14mm socket. They have been nailing the Frenzy poppers but you have to weed thru a lot of bone heads and skippies. As far as bottom goodies, the mangrove fishing continues to be stupid and with gag season opening is set for next month. Broomtails or scamps are taking vertical jigs and little hard tails. The cobia fishing starting next month should go into full gear for us and will be a nice color change in the box on the way in from tuna fishing.
The seasons will soon change in the next 60 days and so will the fishing. Our “big fish” season will soon be upon us with September dates and October filling fast. Don’t just read about it. Come and experience it for your self. Give me a call to book you next trip in Venice.
