Default Proteus - 7/8/2017

Arrived at the Deepwater Proteus about 9:30 PM to calm seas and moderate current. The water was clear with spotty patches of grass. To our surprise, no other boaters in the area. We worked the ship with jigs, trolled & chunked to no avail. We weren't marking any fish but continued to about 0230. We saw several sport fishers and CC's come and go and finally gave in to the fact that the tuna were just not there. We pushed off to Delta House and found many of the same vessels that had departed the Proteus. We started marking fish upon arrival and felt that once we hit the golden hour the bite would be back on. Around 0445, due to a threatening storm cell with strong lightning moving in, we decided to leave while others decided to ride it out. As we moved away at flank speed, we turned and saw the platform covered by the storm cell and were glad we departed. We new that we wanted to be at a rig during the golden hour and due to the lighting still in the area, we passed on Horn Mtn and Ram Powell and headed to Marlin arriving about 0615. Heard from the charter boats that the BFT bite was on all nite and nothing being caught in the AM except mamouth sized hardtails. We confirmed the hardtail bite and used several to deep drop and/or troll to no avail. We departed about 0730 with nothing but 2 BFT to show for the nite. On the way back to OB we decided to hit a favorite cutoff rig and troll for wahoo. On two passes we hooked up on a wahoo a large king (#43) a cuda and an alamaco jack. All were caught and stretch 30's in Pink and dorado colors. With some nice fish in the box we decided to head home about 0930. In hindsight, not a productive tuna trip but sometimes you have to go to plan B. Tight Lines.
